It’s you I like,
It’s not the things you wear,
It’s not the way you do your hair–
But it’s you I like
The way you are right now,
The way down deep inside you–
Not the things that hide you,
Not your toys–
They’re just beside you.
But it’s you I like–
Every part of you,
Your skin, your eyes, your feelings
Whether old or new.
I hope that you’ll remember
Even when you’re feeling blue
That it’s you I like,
It’s you yourself,
It’s you, it’s you I like.
(sniff, sniff)
Have any of you ever heard this Mr. Rogers song? I started to cry when I heard it. I tried to repeat it to Brian and got choked up. My favorite line is “Not your toys — they’re just beside you.” Simple, yet profound.
This is why I love Mr. Rogers and why the world could use more people like him.
“I’ve wanted all these years to let children know that there are many ways to say `I love you.’ And that each one of those children is unique and acceptable,” he said in 1997.
“I’d love to go off to heaven knowing that kids have felt within their being that they have this to share, and that their neighbor is every bit as important as they are.”

Another of his songs that had a profound effect on me was “You Can Never Go Down the Drain” – so reassuring.
I, too, LOVE Mr. Rogers. We still have his albums from my childhood, but alas I haven’t downloaded them onto my ipod. Sigh.
In other news, I taught Abigail to play Skip-Bo over Christmas and thought of you. Good times!!
I like that song, and Mr. Rogers too…!
I also love me some Mr. Rogers.
About 3 years ago, Amber started teaching while she was in Houston. I would get up with her and when she would leave, I would watch Mr. Rogers. I did that for at least 6 months or so. I did it secretly for a while until during dinner one night I started talking about what Mr. Rogers had said that morning.
So, there you have it: A confessed thirty-something who still watches Mr. Rogers.
